Broadband Fact & Fiction

As with all new technologies, people tend to be suspicious at first - especially one sometimes associated with dubious organisations and the young, and where there are potential dangers – such as electronic viruses.

Here we sort out the fact from the fiction.

Fiction: There is no point in having Broadband.
Fact: 8Mb Broadband gives up to 130 times faster access to the web and email.
It's always on, and you can use the phone at the same time as you are transmitting emails or surfing the web, so you'll never miss an urgent email or telephone call. It's capacious, too, enabling large files to be received and sent with ease.

Fiction: It's not available here.
Fact: More than 99% of West Sussex is now enabled for Broadband. There are some rural areas of West Sussex where there are so few telephone lines that BT has no immediate plans to enable the exchange.

The Connecting West Sussex partnership has worked with these areas (where requested) to assist in the provision of alternative (non BT infrastructure) provision.

Fiction: It's a hassle to connect
Fact: In most cases, with support from your Internet Service Provider, you can do it yourself and be ready to go the same day. Installation instructions to connect the Broadband modem or router are provided. However, if you need assistance – why not call Startup Co ?

Note: If you're replacing ISDN, a BT engineer will need to call to dis-connect it first, but it's a simple process and free of charge.

Fiction: I will have to learn a whole load of new techniques.
Fact: If you use email and the web on dial-up, there is nothing new to learn, it is just faster. But it will make more e-opportunities available to you.

Fiction: It's too expensive.
Fact: £20-£30 a month should secure a good connection and, of course, it's a predictable cost.

Fiction: There is no benefit to my business.
Fact: If you use the internet for your business, Broadband will make it faster and easier; but there is much more to it than that.
